Stress Cracks!  (Canada)

I noticed on my Danson trike that I have developed what I can only think is a 5 inch stress crack on the passenger side wheel well where it joins the back bumper. I know the roads here are pretty brtual with potholes and such but I only have about 500 km on the trike. Obviously something I'm going to have to monitor and eventually repair. Anybody else noticed cracks in the Danson body work???

Cheers

Mark

Re: Stress Cracks!  (Canada)

Mine had stress marks, but it did not bother me that much as I was making my own body anyway.  There is some twisting there so something has to give a bit.  Add some more fiberglass mat to the inside where the cracks are.  My body is bolted to the bike , not the trike so there is no stress on mine.   Wayne

Re: Stress Cracks!  (N/A)

Mark,

Is it possible that you could email me a pic of the stress crack on your Danson kit to cooktruck@yahoo.com

I am the one that makes the fiberglass for Danny.

I would be interested in seeing it so that if we have a problem in that area I could re-enforce it more.

I will bring this to the attention of Danny Johnson, The owner of Danson Trikes.

Thank You,

Mike Cook

Thank you very much.

I'm definitley not a happy camper. After 1,500 miles the trike is coming apart.

Here is a fracture running along the left wheel fender where it attaches to the body.

Here is the shattered bracket holding the left fender.

Here is the original fracture down the right fender

The cracking fiberglass under the muffler.

I would understand if this was years of use, but 4 months and 1,500 miles? At this rate I'll have to have some major body work done next spring. I'm taking it in to the shop on Thursday to have the brackets on both sides welded and fitted with extra supports. Sorry I'm just not getting it, this is liesurely city driving not off road!!

Re: Stress Cracks! The fun continues.  (N/A)

Mark,

I am Danny Johnson assistant at Danson Trikes.

I noticed your posting last night and informed Danny of your problem.

We are just now finding out that  some of the support brackets are failing in rough road situations. You stated in your 5-10-08 posting that the roads up there are pretty bad. Danny has decided to make those particular brackets with thicker steel to forgo any further problems.  We have started making the new brackets with the kits that are in production right now.

We are also continuing to improve the Danson Kit. Some of the older fiberglass had to be modified to keep us from infringing on anothers patent.  We have redone our molds to make the new fiberglass stronger and Danny has a patent Pending on his kit now.

We do apologize for any inconvience this has caused you. Danny stands behind his kit. He is very concerned about the satisfaction of all his customers. If you so desire, we can ship you the improved brackets. Danny is also wanting to send you a new set of fenders to replace the damaged ones.

We wish that you would have contacted us first to allow us the opportunity to rectify the situation before posting any negative comments.

I remain,

Sincerely,

Mike Cook

Mike what bracket is failing, I should check mine, is it the one that the bottem of the shock fastens to, mine looks like it might be bent done some, I think that is the weak point.  Wayne

Re: Stress Cracks! The fun continues.  (Canada)

Hi Mike

First let me clarify. I love the Danson trike kit. It's the perfect ride for me. My wife's trike arrived last week and is being installed as I type, so I'm not unhappy enough to not have purchased a second kit! I had the brakets welded with extra support so they are no longer a problem.

I apologize for posting the comments without contacting you and Danny first. My dealing  with Danny was great and he did everything  I could ask when I ordered the kit. Danny is a first class gentlemen in my books. Frankly I was just updating a post I started sometime ago and to be honest other than asking for a photograph, you had done nothing since, and therefore, I had no expectation of any kind of response. Believe me when I say I wasn't trying trash Danson trikes but simply wondering if anyone else has the same problem!

Let me say, when your 3000 miles away and in another country you loose any expectation of service. I mistakenly just assumed that I was on my own and the thought of contacting Danny just never occured to me. Obviously I was wrong and for that I also apologize. Another error is posting 5 minutes after washing the trike and finding more cracks, common sense and I part company when I'm irratated and for that I also apologize.

If Danny is willing to send a new set of fenders, I'm thrilled. I'm sure painting and installing a new set would cost me less than trying to get someone to repair and re-paint the current ones. You can certainly e-mail or call me any time!

A last note, I was at a car show Tuesday night and a couple of Buger riders were in love with the kit, especially the wife who is a bit of a nervous rider. They took it for a short ride and I gave them all info about Danson trikes and they went home swearing to look you up. Trust me when I say I'm still a big fan.

There will be 2 Danson trikes at our house this weekend and I will post some photos.

Cheers

Mark

Re: Stress Cracks! The fun continues.  (N/A)

Wayne,

It seems that the left/right outside brackets on the "backbone" that the fenders mount to are vibrating in extended rough road situations and failing. also, the stand-up bracket that sits on the side-arms (it is bent like a "s" at the bottom) that the fenders mount to on the inside of the wheel wells is also unable to handle extended vibrations.

Please be assured...these brackets are made with 1/8" steel and under normal situations should have never failed. We have had only 2 complaints. Danny decided he didnt want to take any chances so we started using 3/16" steel to make these brackets now.

The shock plates that you are talking about are not the issue. However, you have added an extreme amount of weight to your kit,  those plates are very strong under normal conditions. I can ask Danny if he has any ideas for your kit in particular.

Mike

Re: Stress Cracks! The fun continues.  (N/A)

Mark,

Thank you. I did originally get your photos, but, as you stated in the email they were not very good and I couldnt tell what was going on.

Also, not to make any excuses, but, I broke my ankle just a day or so after that and as you can imagine THAT took all my time. One  note...A perk that comes with working for Danny is that I have access to at least 3 trikes at any time. So, as most people are unable to get around with a cast on I still had the wind in my hair.

I must admit The Burgman 650 is still my favorite ride, but, the 400 is alot of fun too.

I will talk with Danny this morning and we will get the new fenders out to you soon. They will be coming from Denver, the People that are making the fiberglass in Denver have 35 yrs experience and are doing a fabulous job.

Mike
