Re: Stress Cracks! The fun continues.  (Canada)

I dont think they are bent any more than when I started, they are just not at 90 deg where the bottem of the shock goes on, may be the angle that the shock comes down at. I have more stress there as I have my wheels down further as I dont like it to lean to the out side in turns.   With car tire and new backrest my wife says its very comfortable and we have bad roads here.  To really improve the ride of the trike and make it smooth, try the Icon shocks and race tec suspension, then add progressive air shocks to the trike kit.   I made some big improvements in ride , wife says it drive better than her new Impala and that from some one who has a bad back and knee.  You have to spend money for comfort, even the GW trikes upgrade their suspension  to get a better ride.  Wayne

Re: Stress Cracks! The fun continues.  (N/A)

Wayne,

If your talking about the bolt that is bent at 90 degrees and welded to the plate to hold the shock at the bottom, that is normal. you must remember that these kits are hand made, includng almost all the parts on them. we just may have not gotten that particular bolt to completely 90 degrees. some days are better then others. there should be no problem. that is a grade 8 bolt, as are most of the bolts on our kits. you should have no problem.

Mike

Interesting, since I'm being urged to "trike" my Nomad cruiser.

Re: Stress Cracks! The fun continues.  (N/A)
Perhaps an update is due. My wife's trike which is a 2008 has experienced none of the problems I had. A different dealer installed the kit and that may have been a factor as well. Danson trikes has sent me a replacement rear end at no cost to me and I'm grateful for their response to the issue. There has been no further cracking and I'll probably use the old rear for another year before replacing it. Still love the kit , but still trying to get used to people in other vehicles taking pictures when we are on the road! Looking forward to spring!!!! Cheers Mark

Re: Stress Cracks! The fun continues.  (United States)

My 06 Danson 650 Trike had been put together without lock washers, bolts left out, etc.  When I bought it used, it had 28 psi in the two outrigger tires, which allowed the rear end to "bounce" beating both me and the trike kit to pieces.  When they put the kits together at Danson, they send them out with 10-12 psi in the outrigger wheels.  When  l let air out, it improved dramatically.  The combination of whoever put the kit together shoddily and the high psi in rear tires allowed the frame to move and there were 5-6 cracks.  It was not Danny's or the kits fault, but he and Mike took care of it for me, basically making the kit over one day while I waited.  You won't find a couple of nicer guys than Danny and Mike.  I would not hesitate to buy another one.  With the work they redid and the improvements that Wayne suggested, I am riding a Cadillac.  They are always looking for ways to improve their kits, and may even be going to air shocks after working on mine.

Re: Stress Cracks!  (N/A)

I purchased a used Burgman 650 2005 with a Danson 2008 trike set two months ago from a guy up in north east Ohio.  I do have some small stress bumps in the fiberglass but nothing too bad yet.  I just had the scooter painted so it looks pretty good.  Still need to get the trunk painted and I need a part for the back of the scooter that goes around the back taillights.

Two days ago I was riding the bike not to far from where I live when I hit a bump and I heard a bad noise coming from the left rear tire.  I pulled over and noticed the steel bracket that holds the fender up over my left tire cracked into.  How in the heck does a steel brack crack into?  So I limped the bike back home called my buddy and he came over to check it out.

Long story short he made me a new steel bracket at work and brought it over last night to put on.  We bolted it back on with lock nut washers keeping the fiberglass far enought away from the left tire.  Looks ok now and so far not a problem.  I may need to get it welded back just like the one is on the right side.

The question is do you think if I get it welded back on there will be too much stress on the fiberglass causes it to have stress cracks?  I would think welding it would give the part more support but now since it cracked off this last time maybe just bolting it on might be the best alternative.

The darn streets here are bumpy at best in Cincinnati.  I try to keep it off the roads that are loaded with bumps and slow down if possible.  When one drives a car one doesn't notice how many bumps are in the road.  I hope that the trike set doesn't start having problems with the brackets or the fiberglass.

Les
