Newbie in prospect of Danson-ing a 400 k7  (N/A)
Modified By orraman on 12/1/2009 4:41:48 AM)

Hello folks. I've "arrived" frm the UK, unashamaedly (well, almost....) in search of experienced insight..

The context is that I have early -ish Parkinson's Disease, which is fatiguing, has stiffened my right arm / hand / leg (some) and on bad days makes my balance and sense of wellbeing a little uncertain. So having begun to experience some unease with my 900cc Yamaha TDM motorcycle, I moved to a Burgman 400 K7 a couple of years ago, for the sake of a lower centre of gravity.

That proved a wise and enjoyable choice, but PD is progressive and I do sense that things have slipped a little healthwise. I'm working on keeping life as normal and enjoyable as possible, though, as well as safe for myself and others, so I'm considering a Danson conversion for my 400, and have been reading around including this excellent site. I've been a little disturbed about talk of tire wear, handling issues and stress  cracking, but I gues all those are fixxed or fixable - Danson sounds to be a good  company.

But most all of what I've read is about the 650, and I have only a 400. So would the additional weight prove too much for my little motor, especially 2-up? And would it strain  the belt, clutch  or other parts of the CVT? What is the % drop in fuel economy (currently very good)? I appreciate that the 650 would be a better base, but I'm on a retirement budget and there are so few Burgy's in the UK anyway.

Any remarks would be appreciated - even with the current Danson offers it's a big investment.

Thanks.

Ian

Welcome Ian. Your 400 will handel it with no problem and the Danson is a good kit. I have both the Danson and the Trinity trike and the Trinity is just a better all round choise, lighter, easier steering, no stress as it is fastened solid to bike, easier on tires, does not roll in corners, quite, will not get stuck on grass and pot holes, more good comments about it from other riders, not a training wheel type of trike. It would be less expensive to ship as its smaller and less weight as its all aircraft aluminum.  Im trying to sell my Danson , but there is no interested in it here, most want a true trike, so resale value should be higher when you decide to sell.  Thes are just my opinions from having owned both.  Wayne

Thanks Wayne - very useful indeed. Your points in favour of the Trinity  are well made, but it's just so unreasonably expensive. The biking world is always ripofff territory, but in this case the separate listing, and the price, of "extras" like wheels, tires and fenders, is ridiculous. There lies my main problem on a retirement economy.  The other negatives are the chain drive and the extent of modification (= commitmennt if you will?). I'm not sure how the resale picture would look here in th UK where it would likely be one of a kind in any case.  By the way, how difficult does a Danson conversion make access to the CVT etc. for servicing?

Service is no problem with Danson. Tires and wheels could be bought localy which would make up for shipping I would think. The only modification to my bike for the Trinity was my muffler pipe as I did not wan t my bike to set high in back. With the Danson you have to cut a lot of plastic to install  the tubing which cost me well over $1000 to replace when I went back to 2 wheels or Trinity trike. Chain  should not be a problem I would think.  Your center tire will wear out quick, unless you go to a car tire. You can always sell your back wheel and tire to get some of your money back, so in the end I dont think there would be much difference in cost and would think the Trinity would be less.    When you do things the first time you dont always see the full picture , I have done it both ways so I know what you will face in the end. Danson is the best of the training wheel type of trike and you cant go wrong with them, but its still not a trike and I was never happy  with the idea of 3 wheels on the back, just could not get over the thought of it when I was driving it, but Im different from most people.   Wayne
