Reevaluation of the TowPac kit on the Burgman 650  (N/A)

I've had a lot more time and miles on my TowPac equipped 2005 650 since I said the two were not compatible.  The following is from conversation I had with a new convertor:

"I know absolutely nothing about the 400, so I can't really comment about it any further. I personally doubt that any of the bolts supplied by TP will break if properly installed and tightened. As to the other problems mentioned, I also believe that the majority of the troubles are caused by folks trying to make the unit absolutely rigid. I bought my unit used, and found that the previous owner didn't like any leaning or road crown effect and had the right side adjusted so tight that I couldn't get up a slight rise in my driveway because the driving wheel just kicked out stones. I'm fairly sure that had I ridden it much with that setup I would have damaged the mounting bracket that you've read about. Since finding the setup that works for me, I now have put on several hundred miles with no additional noticeable deflection in the bracket. Another possible problem for us old time bikers is taking corners too fast. It doesn't take much speed to lift the inside wheel and put a lot of stress on the outer one. I have changed my opinion on the TP being unsuitable for a 650 if carefully installed and the "trike" ridden appropriately. It's not a true trike and doesn't have the best suspension, either on the Burgman or the TP. I also have no experience with two up riding, so the extra weight may be a factor. My trim 260+/-# does quite well though.<G>"

and:

"The proper setup and down force adjustment is CRITICAL for a good ride and preventing damage to the bike's mounting points. There are lots of opinions on the setup, mine being that the outrigger wheels should have the minimum contact pressure that will keep the bike upright. Others feel differently. There will be a period of trial and error, so I suggest that you NOT install the fenders until you are happy with the way the bike rides."

My apologies to TowPac.

Hi Gramps, glad you're enjoying your Tow-Pac.

I've got around 3000 miles on mine and enjoy it almost everyday. I do 2 up riding maybe 15 or 20% of the time. Without the tp it would be 0% as I am not comfortable holding the extra weight.

I don't think it is designed to be ridged as the flexing allows it to absorb some of the bumps. I just wish I'd made my saddle bag mounts higher because when the big bags are on, the fenders bounce and hit them at times. Sounds like another "opportunity" one day. The inside wheel does come up at time but it seems ok. TP said that was normal. Had even looked at a few mods that would make it stifferor ad shocks fom the grabbars to the front of the fenders for the flexing and bumping the saddle bags but don't see where it is really needed other than just something to piddle with. Be easier just to raise the bags.

Got a little over 7000 miles on it so in about 500 miles will probably take it off for the dealer to do the service at 7500. Maybe by then the rear tire will need replacing and will mount the new tire and some Icon shocks. Haven't ridden it 2 wheel in so long don't know if I'll ride it to the dealer or trailer it the 80 miles each way. Any way the tp will be going back on it as I do like it.

When mine is sitting on level ground you can reach down and turn either of the training wheels without much trouble. May experiment with them when I change the tire as the car tire is larger and it will need adjusting then anyway.

I did go down a levy a few weeks ago and could not get enough traction to come up the grass. Was fortunate that there was a concrete area going back up that I could use and it worked fine. Had one of the grandkids on the back and he thought that was great fun.

Keep enjoying it ...Sonny
